Champion for Children History
Champion for Children is a statewide conference designed to offer quality training and information on topics of interest to leaders in child abuse prevention. First held in April of 1999, the first of the Champion for Children Conference series was actually called “Coming Together for Children.” It featured a keynote by then District Judge Scott McCown, who now leads the Center for Public Policy Priorities in Austin. Initially spearheaded by six organizations, the C4C has benefited through the years from a continually growing group of collaborators. Groups that benefit from the conference include: social workers, counselors, educators, child care and youth workers, law enforcement personnel, medical and legal professionals, foster parents, child welfare board volunteers, elected officials, and other interested child advocates. Participants may attend their choice of a variety of workshops on child abuse and neglect prevention and educational programs or may select workshops for specialized training credits and professional development. The conference also serves as the “kick-off” event for Child Abuse Prevention month which is recognized every year in April. The conference hosts a special luncheon in honor of Texas children and Child Abuse Prevention month.
